A GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award for Bobby Darin
February 2010
Pass the peanuts.
Get the ice out.
Roll the rug up.
It's today.
Bobby Darin will be awarded the academy award of music – the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in January of 2010. This is huge. It’s been fifty years in the making and the waiting for his career to find its culminating event. NOW is the time. It’s a triumph for the artist, a justification of his career choices and decisions, and a fulfillment of his dreams to be the Man and make it.
It's a time for making merry.
And I'm for making hay.
Tune the grand up.
Dance your shoes off.
Strike the band up.
It's today.
The award is given to “performers who in their lifetimes have made creative contributions of outstanding artist significance to the field of recording.” I’m so pleased that he is being recognized as a musician as well as a singer/songwriter. Many of his contributions to popular music have been recorded jewels of different hues in different genres and came at different times of his short but illustrious career. They are now being recognized as such at the highest level of recognition that a recording artist can aspire to.
Light up the candles.
Fill up the punch bowl.
Throw confetti, yeah!
It's today.
He is described by the Board of Trustees as a “musician who was an accomplished singer/songwriter who taught himself to play drums, harmonica, piano, guitar and vibraphone. He reached huge success with a string of hits …. Though his life was short with his passing at age 37 in 1973, Darin made the most of his musical career penning more than 170 songs and winning two GRAMMY awards. He transcended boundaries with his music that closed the gap between musical genres and generation.”
There's a thank you
You can give life.
If you live life
All the way.
Thank you to all the keepers of the flame who kept Bobby and his music alive in the minds of those who cared, especially the fans who sustained their interest in Bobby Darin from the late 1950s all the way to 2010. And a special thanks to the musicians who played with him and talked about their experiences with this extraordinary artist. Oh, and another thank you to the writers, the critics, biographers and friends who helped us to understand the talent and drive behind the desire for success, but most of all thanks to Bobby Darin who remained true to his vision of what was possible to accomplish in the field of popular music.
Call the cops out.
Hold the roof down.
Pull the stops out.
It's today.
I’m back standing in the space that was the Copacabana and imagining that outstanding talent at work. This is un-freaking timelessly amazing. I believed in you always, Bobby.
